Building A1 is a two-level building with retail and restaurant use at the ground level and flexible office space above. The upper level can also be converted to restaurants -- taking advantage of the terrace. For shading and seasonal concerns, the terrace is designed to have retractable fabric awnings. This building will be a plaster and board-form concrete building for the terrace element and it will appear as if it has been retrofitted with new openings for its new building functions. All openings will have structural steel lintels to support and frame the new openings and further add to the character and charm of the building and surrounding area.
The design criteria for Building A1 was very similar to that described for Building A. Although Building A1 is almost a replication of the building that once stood on this very site. The proportion and architecture of the old Live Hardware Store were emulated and adapted the design of Building A1 to its new two-level function within the overall height envelope of its predecessor.
Building A and A1 create a dynamic pedestrian entry and gathering area along Edison Lane as it meets Mission Street to the north.
